The Best Sunset Spots in Koh Phangan

Koh Phangan faces west across the Gulf of Thailand, which means almost the entire island is set up for sunset and almost none of it is set up for sunrise. The good spots divide into two kinds, and choosing between them is most of the decision.

At sea level the sun drops into the water directly in front of you. It is close, warm and brief — and you can be standing in the sea while it happens. From a hilltop you trade that intimacy for scale and duration: the whole west coast, the islands offshore, and light that keeps working for a good twenty minutes after the sun has technically gone.

Neither is better. They are different evenings.

How to actually plan the evening

Arrive earlier than feels necessary

Forty-five minutes before sunset is the right target almost everywhere. At Zen Beach and Amsterdam Bar, make it an hour — both fill up long before the sun is anywhere near the horizon, and the difference between a good spot and a bad one is entirely about when you turned up.

Watch the weather, not the forecast

A completely clear sky is not the best sunset sky. Scattered cloud is what produces the colour. In the wet season the light after a shower clears is often the best of the year, so a rainy afternoon is not a reason to cancel.

Getting home

This is the part most visitors underestimate. Several of the hilltop spots — ours included — sit at the top of steep roads, and riding down in the dark on an unfamiliar scooter is harder than riding up in daylight. If you are not confident, take a taxi, or pick somewhere at sea level.

Decide whether you want dinner

Most of the famous sunset spots are bars, and the reviews reflect it — people love the view and are lukewarm about the food. If you want the sunset and a dinner worth remembering to be the same event, book a restaurant rather than turning up at a bar hungry.
