Why the Sunset Is Different From Up Here
Koh Phangan has no shortage of places to watch the sun go down, and most of them are on the sand. A beach sunset is lovely and it is also short: the sun drops behind the headland or the treeline well before it reaches the horizon, and the colour goes with it.
From 150 metres up there is nothing in the way. The sun goes down into the water rather than behind something, which buys you a noticeably longer golden hour and the whole second act afterwards — the ten or fifteen minutes once the sun has gone when the sky does its best work. That is the part most people miss because they have already left the beach.
You also see the shape of it. From the terrace the west coast of Koh Phangan is laid out end to end, so you watch the light move across the island rather than just at the sun. On a clear evening Koh Samui sits on the horizon to the south.
Dinner With a View, Timed Properly
The single most common mistake is arriving as the sun touches the horizon. By then the best of it has been going for half an hour and the good tables are taken.
Be seated 45 minutes before
Order a drink and something small. The light starts changing long before anything dramatic happens, and you want to be settled rather than still reading a menu.
Start light, eat properly after
Nobody wants a main course arriving at the moment the sky turns. Small plates through golden hour, mains once the colour has gone and the table settles.
Stay for the twenty minutes after
The sky often does more once the sun is down than while it is going. The tables that empty at that exact moment are the ones that came for a photograph rather than an evening.

Hilltop or Beach — Which Sunset Suits You
Both are worth doing, and they are genuinely different evenings. A beach sunset on Koh Phangan puts the water at your feet and the sun at eye level; the trade is that it ends early, it is busier, and the sandflies arrive at dusk.
A hilltop sunset gives you the long version and the whole coastline, in exchange for a climb at the start and a careful ride at the end. What to order at golden hour
The half hour before sunset is for something you can linger over rather than a full plate. Start light, then move to the main courses once the colour has gone and the table settles.
Two-thirds of our menu is plant-based and one-third is wild-caught seafood, with no land meat anywhere on it.

What time is sunset in Koh Phangan?
Between roughly 17:58 in November and 18:46 in July. The earliest sunsets fall in November and December, the latest in June and July. The table above gives approximate times for every month.
When should I come?
Whenever suits you — we are open from 12:00, and a long lunch above the canopy is a different pleasure to the sunset. If the sunset is what you are here for, aim to be seated around 45 minutes before, and book ahead in high season: those tables go first.
What makes it special up here?
