Most "best restaurants" lists for this island are a ranked ten, which is the least useful possible format. Whether Fisherman’s is better than DAO is not a real question — they are for different nights, different budgets and different parts of the island.

So this is sorted by cuisine, with prices and areas, and no ranking. Skip to whichever section matches your evening.

Thai

The island’s default and still, on most nights, the best value. The rule of thumb: the further from a beach road, the better and cheaper it gets.

Where to go when the meal is the event. Covered further in our fine dining guide.

Three things worth knowing

The night market is not a tourist trap

Thong Sala’s night market is genuinely where locals eat, and it is the cheapest good food on the island. Go once even if you are eating well elsewhere.

Low season closes things

Between roughly June and October a number of places shorten hours or shut entirely. Nothing here is guaranteed to be open without a check first.

Distances are longer than they look

Chaloklum to Haad Rin is a 40-minute ride on roads you would rather not take in the dark. Pick a restaurant near where you are sleeping, or plan the return trip properly.

Disclosure

We are a restaurant on this island and we have put ourselves in the high-end section, so this is not a disinterested list. We have tried to describe the others as we would describe them to a friend — including the ones we lose bookings to. If you want the best cooking on Koh Phangan it is DAO, not us. Our menu is here if you want to judge for yourself.
