Koh Phangan has a reputation problem where romance is concerned. People arrive expecting beach parties and are surprised to find that the island is, most nights, extremely quiet — and that the quiet is the point.

The choice comes down to three settings, and they produce genuinely different evenings.

Three kinds of romantic dinner

Beachfront

Feet near the sand, the sound of water, sunset at eye level. Warm and informal. You will also meet sandflies at dusk, and hurricane glass is your friend for candles.

Hilltop

The whole coastline, a longer sunset, cooler air and much less noise. The trade is the ride up, and most hilltop venues close earlier.

Indoors

Candlelight, no wind, no insects, and an interior built for the purpose. You give up the view entirely — which for some evenings is the right call.
