Drinking Nothing on Koh Phangan
The island famous for a party is also one of the easiest places in Asia not to drink. Here is how that works.

Koh Phangan has two populations that barely overlap. One arrives for a monthly party at Haad Rin. The other lives here, practises in the mornings, and includes a very large number of people who do not drink at all.
If you are sober, sober-curious, pregnant, in recovery or simply taking a month off, this is a far easier island than its reputation implies. Nobody will ask why.
Sober social life actually exists here
This is the part that distinguishes Koh Phangan from most beach destinations. There is a real social calendar that has nothing to do with alcohol:
Ecstatic dance
Free-form, no talking on the floor, no alcohol served. Weekly around Srithanu and often the busiest floor on the island that night. If you have never been, it is less intimidating than it sounds — people are entirely absorbed in themselves.
Cacao ceremonies
Ceremonial cacao with music or breathwork. Common, and quality varies — ask who is facilitating rather than booking off a flyer.
Sound healing and kirtan
Evening events that fill venues without a bar in sight. Check noticeboards in Srithanu.
Sunset, as an event in itself
The most reliable one. Nobody needs a drink to sit on a beach or a hill and watch the light go — see the sunset guide.
What to order anywhere on the island
The problem with not drinking in Thailand is not availability. It is sugar. Most of what gets handed to a non-drinker here is syrup with ice in it.
Good orders
- · Fresh coconut — everywhere, cheap, genuinely good
- · Soda with fresh lime, no syrup
- · Kombucha, in the Srithanu cafés
- · Fresh juice, specifying no sugar
- · Iced tea, unsweetened — say mai sai nam tan
- · A proper zero-proof cocktail, where a venue makes them
Worth one extra sentence
- · Fruit shakes — ask for them made on fresh fruit alone
- · Iced coffee — ask for it black or with oat milk
- · Juices — say mai sai nam tan and they arrive clean
- · Mocktails — ask what is in it, and order the one they sound proud of
One phrasing tip that changes the answer: rather than asking for a mocktail, ask "do you have a non-alcoholic list?" Venues that have thought about it light up at that question, and you will get their best work.
Our zero-proof list, and what each one is for
We keep 11 zero-proof drinks, all 200฿, hand-crafted with the same care as anything with gin in it — butterfly pea and blue spirulina, hibiscus and coconut nectar, a house craft cola, a cacao shot. They sit on the drinks list right beside the cocktails, because that is exactly where they belong. Here is what each one is for:
Yin Tonic
200฿Coconut and cucumber.
The cleanest thing on the list. Coconut and cucumber, cold and barely sweet — the one to start with when you have come off a hot road.
Blue Tonic
200฿Coconut water, butterfly pea flower and blue spirulina.
Butterfly pea flower turns it violet, blue spirulina deepens it, and coconut water carries the whole thing. The drink people photograph before they taste it.
Hibiscus Lemonade
200฿Hibiscus, Persian orange and coconut nectar.
Tart and floral, sweetened with coconut nectar rather than syrup. The best match for anything fried or salty on the food menu.
Pink Nojito
200฿A vibrant, fruity spin on the virgin mojito.
Fresh mint and lime worked properly, with fruit in place of the rum. The closest thing here to a long, all-evening drink.
Mountain Virgin Rosé
200฿An elegant, sparkling floral treat.
Sparkling, floral and dry enough to toast with. What to hand someone at a table where everyone else has a glass of wine.
Craft Cola
200฿Our own blend of citrus and warm spices.
Blended in-house from citrus peel and warm spices. It tastes like cola the way it was originally supposed to — bitter edges and all.
Ginger Ale
200฿A zesty, house-crafted kick with a sweet finish.
Real ginger, so it has genuine heat. Good after a big plate, and the one to order if your stomach is still adjusting to the tropics.
Indian Spice
200฿Warm, aromatic tea with a touch of sweetness.
Cardamom, clove and black tea, gently sweetened. The one to hold as the light goes and the hill cools off.
Elder Wise
200฿Sophisticated black tea with a floral twist.
Black tea with elderflower — tannic and grown-up. The drink for anyone who misses the structure of a glass of red.
Cacao Shot
200฿A concentrated burst of pure, indulgent cocoa.
Pure concentrated cocoa, unsweetened and surprisingly lifting. A small, deliberate finish in place of a dessert wine.
Fresh Orange Juice
200฿Pressed to order. Sometimes the answer really is just good fruit.
Every one is built to order by the same hands that make the cocktails. Ordering nothing alcoholic here gets you the whole evening — the full list is here.
Planning around the full moon
Worth stating plainly if you are avoiding drinking culture: the Full Moon Party is one night, at one beach, once a month. Check the lunar calendar before booking, avoid staying at Haad Rin that week, and it will not touch your trip. The rest of the island, on that night and every other, is among the quietest places in southern Thailand — see when to visit.
