When to Visit Koh Phangan
Weather, sea, crowds and closures month by month — including why the low season is better than people tell you.
The first thing to know is that Koh Phangan is on the Gulf side of Thailand, not the Andaman side. Its seasons run on a different calendar to Phuket and Krabi, and a great deal of the advice people arrive with is advice for the wrong coast.
In short: the driest months here are January to April, and the wettest is November — which is roughly when the west coast of Thailand is at its best.

These are typical conditions, not forecasts. The Gulf is less predictable than the Andaman coast and any given year can break the pattern entirely.

The case for low season
"Rainy season" sounds like a washout and mostly is not. Through June, July and August the typical pattern is a heavy shower for an hour, often late afternoon, and sun either side of it. You lose some beach time. You gain an island at perhaps a third of its high-season occupancy, noticeably lower prices, and skies that do far more interesting things at sunset than a cloudless February evening ever manages.
The genuine trade-offs are real, though:
- ·Things close. September and October especially — some restaurants shut for weeks. Always check before a long ride.
- ·The roads get harder. Steep hill roads and heavy rain are a poor combination on a scooter. See getting around.
- ·Ferries can be cancelled. Rare, but it happens in November. Do not book a tight onward flight.
Full moon, and planning around it
Koh Phangan hosts a large monthly party at Haad Rin, and whether that is a reason to come or a reason to time your trip differently is entirely down to you. Practically: the island fills for two or three days either side, accommodation prices spike, and the roads at night get considerably busier. If you are here for quiet, check the lunar calendar before you book. If you are here for the party, everywhere else on the island stays calm anyway.
One seasonal note from us
We are open daily, 12:00–21:00 all year, but the view is not the same every month. January and February give the clearest air and the sharpest horizon.
