Koh Phangan is far more mountainous than most visitors expect. Roughly seventy per cent of it is jungle-covered hill, which is why the island has so many viewpoints and why several of them take real effort to reach.

The useful thing to know upfront: the best views here are not the hardest to get to. Every well-known viewpoint on this list is drivable. Hiking buys you solitude, not scenery.

Depends what you are after, and the honest answers point in three directions:

For the view itself

Three Sixty. Both coasts from one terrace is something no other spot on the island offers.

For the walk

Khao Ra. Accept that the summit is treed and enjoy the jungle on the way up.

For an evening

Any of the Ban Tai hill spots. Close to everything, and you can eat where you are standing.

Practical notes

·Time it for late afternoon. Midday is hot and the light is flat. Aim to arrive 45 minutes before sunset — the sunset guide has times by month.
·Most access roads are steep. Take an adequate scooter, or a taxi. See getting around.
·Hikes need shoes and water. Khao Ra in particular is not a flip-flop walk, and it gets slick in the wet season.
·Coming down in the dark is the hard part. Whatever you rode up, the descent after sunset is the bit to plan for.
