The Best Beaches on Koh Phangan
Fourteen beaches, what each is actually like, and which are worth the boat or the bad road.
Koh Phangan's beaches divide roughly by coast, and the division matters more than any ranking. The west is easy to reach, calm most of the year, and where the sunsets are. The east has the best sand and the worst roads. The north has the snorkelling. The south is the most convenient base on the island, and shines at low tide for long flat walks and sunset drinks rather than deep swimming.
The other thing worth knowing early: several of the best beaches here are boat-access only, and that is precisely why they are still good.

Bottle Beach (Haad Khuat)
North coastLongtail boat, or a 45-min coastal hike
No road reaches it, which is exactly why it stays as it is. Take the boat from Chaloklum. Bring cash — there are a handful of bungalows and not much else.
Thong Nai Pan Noi
East coastA long, steep road
The smaller of the two Thong Nai Pan bays and the prettier one. Calm, well-kept, with resorts along the sand. The road there has improved but is still a serious ride.
Thong Nai Pan Yai
East coastSame road
Bigger, wider and quieter than its neighbour. Good for a whole day.
Haad Yuan
East coastBoat from Haad Rin, or a rough track
Reachable mainly by longtail. Home to The Sanctuary and a small, long-standing alternative community. Quiet in a way the west coast rarely manages.

Next along from Haad Yuan, similar in feel, with clear water at the rocky ends.

North-west coastEasy road
Walk the sandbar out to the islet at low tide. The reef around Koh Ma is the most rewarding snorkelling Koh Phangan has. Check tide times first.
Chaloklum

A working harbour rather than a beach day. Come for the boats and the seafood, which is the freshest and cheapest on the island.
Secret Beach

Small, shallow, west-facing and calm. Best in the last hour of light.
Zen Beach

Fire spinners, drummers and a crowd most evenings. More a gathering than a beach. Shallow water and a very long walk out at low tide.

Beautiful sand, genuinely. Also the Full Moon Party beach — check the lunar calendar before booking anything nearby if you want quiet.

Ban Tai & Baan Kai

Long, shallow and very tidal — you will walk a long way out. Good for a sunset drink and easy access to everywhere else.
Three things nobody warns you about
The south coast is very tidal
Ban Tai and Baan Kai look like beaches on a map and behave like mudflats at low tide. You can walk out a long way and still be ankle-deep. They are fine for a sunset drink and poor for a swim — do not book a week there expecting to get in the water.
The east coast roads are the real cost
Thong Nai Pan and the beaches around Haad Rin are worth the trip, but the roads are steep and long. Factor in the ride back after dark, or take a boat. See getting around.
Check the tide before Koh Ma
The sandbar to Koh Ma only exists at lower tides. Arrive at the wrong hour and the best snorkelling on the island is a swim rather than a walk.
A note on where we are
Spend the afternoon in the water on the west coast — that is what these beaches are for. Then come up the hill for the last hour of light, when the whole coastline you have just been swimming off opens up beneath you.
