Things to Do on Koh Phangan
Beyond the beach and beyond the party — what is actually worth your time, what it costs, and what needs booking.

Koh Phangan's reputation does it a disservice. Most people arrive knowing one thing about the island, and it happens once a month at one beach. The other twenty-nine days are jungle, waterfalls, a national marine park an hour offshore, and one of the largest yoga communities in Asia.
Roughly seventy per cent of the island is protected forest. That is the part nobody mentions.

In detail
Ang Thong Marine National Park
Day trip~2,000–3,000฿Forty-two limestone islands, an emerald lagoon and a viewpoint climb. The single best day trip from Koh Phangan and the one thing here most worth the money. Boats run in reasonable weather only.
Phaeng Waterfall & viewpoint
NatureFreeInside the national park, with a 30–45 minute climb to a viewpoint above the falls. Shaded, so a good option in heat. Reduced to a trickle in dry months.
Than Sadet waterfall & national park
NatureFreeOn the east coast, historically visited by Thai kings — their initials are carved into the rocks. Best after rain.
Koh Ma snorkelling
WaterFreeWalk the sandbar from Mae Haad at low tide and snorkel the reef. The best free thing to do on the island.
Thong Sala night market
Food100–300฿Most evenings in the main town. Where islanders actually eat, and the cheapest good food here by a wide margin.
Khao Ra hike
NatureFreeThe island’s highest point at around 627m, 2–3 hours return through jungle. Go for the walk — the summit view is partly blocked by trees.
Scuba diving & Sail Rock
Water3,000–5,000฿Sail Rock, between Koh Phangan and Koh Tao, is the best dive site in the Gulf and a reliable spot for whale sharks in season.
Yoga or a retreat
WellnessFrom 400฿ drop-inSrithanu is one of Asia’s serious practice destinations. Drop-in classes are easy; residential courses fill months ahead.
Muay Thai training
Active400–600฿ a sessionSeveral gyms take drop-ins. Less publicised than the yoga and well established.
A sunset, properly planned
EveningFree to 500฿The island’s most reliable pleasure. Sixteen options and month-by-month timings in our sunset guide.
The Full Moon Party
Nightlife~200฿ entryMonthly at Haad Rin. Enormous, and genuinely fun if that is what you came for. If it is not, check the lunar calendar and stay elsewhere that week.
A day doing nothing
EssentialFreeNot a joke. The most common regret we hear from visitors is over-scheduling a small island that rewards the opposite.
If you only have a few days
One full day
Ang Thong marine park. Nothing else here matches it, and it eats the whole day.
One morning
Koh Ma sandbar and snorkelling, tide permitting. Free and genuinely good.
One evening
Thong Sala night market, or a sunset somewhere with a view — see the sunset guide.
