Yoga & Wellness on Koh Phangan
How one village on the west coast became a wellness capital — and how to eat and drink well around a practice.

Koh Phangan carries two reputations that seem contradictory and are not. It is known globally for a monthly party at one beach, and it is known within the yoga world as one of Asia's serious practice destinations. Both are true, they happen roughly twenty kilometres apart, and most visitors experience only one.
The wellness half is centred almost entirely on Srithanu, a village on the west coast that has quietly accumulated schools, retreat centres, plant-based kitchens and a resident community over the past two decades.
Why Srithanu
Nothing about the geography explains it — the beach is shallow and the sunsets are no better than elsewhere on that coast. What happened is more ordinary: a few schools established themselves in the early 2000s, teachers stayed, students returned, and the infrastructure a practice community needs — plant-based kitchens, affordable long-stay housing, other practitioners — accumulated in one place. Density begets density.
The main schools
Agama Yoga
Tantra and hathaSrithanuDrop-in classes and long courses
The school that arguably created Srithanu as a yoga destination, and still the largest. Long-form courses rather than casual drop-ins, though drop-ins exist.
Orion Healing Centre
Detox, breathwork, yogaSrithanuRetreats and courses
Best known for detox and cleanse programmes alongside daily classes. Beachfront, long-established.
Samma Karuna
Awakening, meditation, healing artsSrithanuResidential courses
Donation-influenced pricing and a strong community feel. More inner-work than asana.
The Sanctuary
Detox, yoga, holistic retreatHaad Tien (boat access)Multi-day stays
On a boat-access beach, which is most of the appeal. A destination in itself rather than somewhere you drop into for a class.
Pyramid Yoga
Meditation in pyramid structuresNear SrithanuCourses
Idiosyncratic and long-running. People who like it, like it a great deal.
Wonderland Healing Centre
Yoga, ecstatic dance, workshopsSrithanuDrop-in and events
A good first stop if you want to sample rather than commit to a course.
Schedules, prices and even ownership change here more often than in most places. Treat this as a map of the landscape rather than a timetable, and check directly before travelling.
Beyond the mat
Ecstatic dance
Free-form, sober, no talking on the floor. Several venues around Srithanu run weekly sessions and they are a genuine fixture — often the busiest alcohol-free venue on the island.
Cacao ceremonies
Ceremonial-grade cacao, usually with music or breathwork. Common, and quality varies — ask who is facilitating rather than booking on the flyer alone.
Breathwork and detox
Several centres run multi-day cleanse programmes. If you have a medical condition, take that seriously and speak to a doctor rather than a retreat coordinator.
Muay Thai
Less publicised than the yoga but well established, with gyms taking drop-ins across the south of the island.
Eating and drinking around a practice
This is where Koh Phangan genuinely outperforms other retreat destinations. Srithanu has the densest cluster of fully plant-based kitchens in southern Thailand — see the vegan guide for the full list.
Two practical gaps to plan around:
- ·Dinner is harder than lunch. The vegan scene here is overwhelmingly daytime. Several places close between lunch and evening.
- ·Going out sober is under-served. Plenty of people here are not drinking, and most bars still treat that as a soft-drinks problem rather than a menu.
Both of those are why we exist in the shape we do
We are a restaurant, not a wellness centre, so take this for what it is. But the two gaps above are the ones we were built around: serious plant-based cooking served at dinner, and 11 craft zero-proof drinks made with the same attention as anything with gin in it.
We are also adults-only and close at 21:00, which suits an early practice. The zero-proof list and the plant-based kitchen are the relevant pages. For a fully-vegan venue rather than a split kitchen, Pure Vegan Heaven in Srithanu is the honest answer and is much closer to the schools.
Frequently asked questions
Where is the yoga scene?
Srithanu, on the west coast. Almost all of it is within a few minutes of that one village.
Do I need to book ahead?
For residential courses and teacher trainings, yes — months ahead in high season. Drop-ins rarely need it.
Is it good for a first retreat?
Yes. Wide range, low prices by international standards, and a food scene that supports it.
What is ecstatic dance?
Free-form sober dancing, no talking, no alcohol. Weekly around Srithanu and a genuine island institution.
